think we could have imagined that scenario either. it's really played out quite well for the draft class of 2012. to see your 4th round draft pick come in. just got to keep winning in order to get there. he was a cool customer on sunday. and threw for over 300 yards. second most passing yards for a red skin quarterback period. and second most in the history of the redskins. pretty heavy stuff for what he did on sunday leading to a road win. a win anywhere in the nfl is tough. so again the concern is is robert ready. do you let him go one more week? >> we're going to play robert when he's 100%. when that ligament is fine and the doctors feel there's no chance for injury that he can go out there

7:35 am
emotions, michelle palmer joins us this morning. good morning. thanks for coming in today. >> my pleasure. >> we are all feeling this pain. i don't know whether it's because of the ages of the kids. whether we feel drained in our own lives we connect with this. it feels different. feels like we are all together. do you have an insight, some reason into why we would connect so much with the families we have probably never met? >> i think there's probably lots of reasons for that. one is certainly the age of the victims in this tragedy. so many of us relate to how vulnerable little kids are. we ourselves feel vulnerable. when we see small children are victims of these tragedies, it resonates with us.
7:36 am
we are reeling from other tragedies. the mall shooting, the super storm. we are all feeling vulnerable. we were feeling vulnerable anyway. so this complicates that and the fact that it's the holiday season. all of those things come together and really hit home for so-so many of us. >> it is impossible to think about losing a child. i'll remain local and talk about what we can do to get through this and also suspect a lot of that is you do feel helpless because it's a community that is not here that is states away and you feel like you can't do anything in your help list. so we sit and we watch the news and the information that's coming in. so is there a way for us to grieve from a distance, go through our emotions in a healthy way and try to carry on?
7:37 am
>> absolutely. that's different depending how old we are. i'm going to talk about little kids first. for little kids, they are not miniature adults running around the world. their brain is different so how they understand information and how they regulate their emotions are different than adults. so when you're talking to kids, talk in terms of feelings that they understand. mad, sad. give them permission to feel all of those feelings even relief that it wasn't their school or their friends. give them outlets to express that emotion. no matter how old we are that those feelings are big. and we need ways to express them that are healthy that don't do any harm to anyone around us or ourselves.
7:38 am
so think about things such as for little kids maybe ask a question i wonder how you feel about this. i wonder if you are going to make a card for the mommies and the daddies in connecticut, what you might say. it helps kids sort of get that out. we don't want that stuck inside. we want to be able to get it out. for adults and teenagers, teenagers are themselves. they want to be with their friends. that is the most important thing. and that is okay. as parents allow that . don't feel rejected if your teenager wants to go and hang with their friends. are you talking about these things with your friends? we want to make sure this is constructive. there's a lot of anger out there. >> right. >> and that's normal. there's a lot to be angry about. we want to make sure we're
7:39 am
expressing that anger in ways that don't hurt ourselves or others. >> there's lots of great information through your organization. some of the common reactions to a death and loved one. there are things to look out for and how to cope with it. you talk about the task of morning. let me ask you here in our area we see gun violence all the time. not like this necessarily but add the numbers up. the kids sadly die. perhaps there's somebody at home watching and triggers some emotion if they've lost a child in this violent way, what would your advice to them be? >> recognize that you are not crazy. it is perfectly normal to have this experience that happened in sandy hook resonate with you. if you've lost somebody to gun is likely going to trigger a lot of the emotions that you experience at the time of the
7:40 am
loss. recognize that is very normal and talk about it. again, we want to make sure we're expressing those feelings. talk to your pastor, talk to your friends, talk to your family. talk to a grief counselor. >> talk. don't let it sit there. i'm hearing that with all the age groups and no matter what your circumstance. all right. executive director thank you so much. >> thank you. >> tony, over to you. >> thank you both. it is 7:40 now. coming up. the mayor of one new jersey town came up with a unique and smelly strategy gee. we'll explain. here's another message from a service member overseas. >> hello, this is petty officer in korea. wanted to give a special holiday shout out to my father and my mother in springfield virginia. merry christmas and i'll see you guys

7:45 am
the original carving dates back to the 7th century but the maya ns were not suggesting the world would end friday, just their calendar. it starts all over again on saturday. >> how come that hasn't been widely reported? >> cause it's not as glamorous as world ends. >> if you've been worried about it, the fact they built a new museum to contain this would indicate. >> the oldest women is 115. we just reported on her. >> yes. as is the new oldest person. >> that's amazing. >> yeah, it is. >> wow. >> 100 years ago people didn't live to be 115. >> 100 years old is more and more common. >> incredible. let's do your forecast. decent day. a lot more sunshine than yesterday. it is going to

it appears the mayor of new jersey has solved christmas tree capers. a few years ago someone started stealing evergreen trees from the park. he had them sprayed with a chemical that admits an obnoxious smell. the town hasn't had any missing trees sing putting this plan into action. >> i'd say. >> want to mention a few months old when we reported on the oldest living woman sounded like i said she was 150. testifies 115. >> i thought it was just me. >> apparently others thought. coming up . using food as a tool to change lives. >> that's the mission inside a one special dc kitchen. holly, good morning. >> reporter: you are right. this isn't just any kitchen. it's the country's first community kitchen. we are live

more? just to expand the mission or is the need greater as well? >> the need is greater and we're able to see the impact of getting fresh healthy food to a wider number of people. >> so part of it is about better understanding how you can help more efficiently? >> absolutely. what we're trying to do is increase access points for helping affordable food. when we expand for the schools, we notice yes, the kids are getting great food when they are at school but don't have the opportunity to get that kind of food at home. wanted to figure out a way to bring the local food we're serving in schools to the neighborhoods and help people enjoy that same food everyday. >> how hard is it to continually get money? i would think there's a lot of people that go they don't need us because so many people
